Manchester Orchestra, 'Simple Math' (Interface)

You've seen them on the 'Late Show with David Letterman,' 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien,' and heard their music on CW's 'Gossip Girl,' 'One Tree Hill' and saucy shows like '90210' and British teen drama 'Skins.' Now you can see the enigmatic Atlanta rockers Manchester Orchestra right here on the Interface.

While the band's third studio album may be unified by singer Andy Hull's thematic struggle to make sense of his life, his career and his marriage, the record is not as much a traditional concept piece as a 10-song dialog between the harrowed frontman and himself.

At times reflective, confessional, furious and bitter; 'Simple Math' is a revelatory trial by fire, a portrait of a man still trapped in the rubble of a collapse, exulting at the light at the end of the tunnel.

"In some ways, I don't care that people know it's a story about me and my wife re-finding this love for each other. Maybe people think it's cooler if it is [a concept album]. It gives more" -- Andy Hull

Being a retired musician (but only for health reasons), I'm simply amazed and apalled at the daily bunk we're fed in the name of a 'band'. Mostly the so-called band is made up of maybe as many as 4 gitter (guitar) players joined by a standing keyboard thumper and of course a maniac that generates thousands and thousands of decibels with a massive set of unnecessary tubs called drums.
Now, at the extreme risk of being called an old-fashioned and behind the tiimes codger, I can only reiterate what the instrumentation of a TRUE band should be. Even this description is nesessarily void of a few instruments such as a string section and/or French Horns. So, here 'tis :

FIVE Saxes - 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, and a Baritone
FOUR Trombones (one of them being Bass)
FIVE Trumpets , - - - and finally
Piano, String Bass, Guitar, and Drums
I've found that in over 55 years of playing with this and various other sized 'groups' that we were always able to
furnish excellent dancing music, show accompianment, and equally pleasant sound all-round. Of course, this also means that each anc every member of the band should be an ample 'reader' and proficient with his or her respective insturment/s. I somehow feel that many of these contemporary 'Gitter Pickers' may NOT really know how t o read 'the page'.
So - - - - - There! I've said it ! If there are any that agree, OK, and if there are any that don't agree, OK as well.

Nearly all Rock 'n' Roll is just bits a fluff -- a few chords and a lot of rhythm. You write about this guy's stuff so seriously, as if he were the second coming of Wagner or Debussy. Too silly for words. I love Rock but it's pretty much mindless entertainment. Treating it with so much respect undermines civilization.
