The Horrors on Cracking the Top 40 Charts With Its 'Bloody Awful Music'

The HorrorsXL Recordings

The times they are a-changing. At least that's what the assumption is after the Horrors' third full-length release, 'Skying,' debuted at No. 5 on the British Top 40 charts in July.

"It was just for a week," keyboardist Tom Furse tells Spinner. "But it was a small victory."

"We were up there with some really strong women," guitarist Josh Hayward adds. "It felt good."

The "strong women" they're referring to are Adele, Beyonce and Lady Gaga, who rounded up the top chart spots at the time. Stars that are on the other side of the spectrum when compared to the British four-piece.

"It's not something we ever really think about," says Hayward. "[But someone asked], 'Do you think your album can go Top 5?', and it's like, 'No.' And he was like, 'But you didn't think your record was good?' And I was like, 'No, I thought it was good.' You just don't really expect it."

"Yeah, it's always been bloody awful music in the charts, and every so often there's some really good stuff as well," adds Furse.

"We reflect the good side of it," laughs Hayward. "They're finally catching up to us."

Mainstream music fans aren't the only ones who took some time to warm up to the the Horrors. Noel Gallagher was also apparently a naysayer until outing himself as a fan recently.

"When [Gallagher] first heard [our 2009 album,] 'Primary Colours,' I think he was like, 'I'm not having any of that,'" explains Furse. "And then, two years later, he thinks it's the best thing he's ever heard."

"Actually, that's one thing I really do like, and something we've always had, is a bit of recognition from our peers," he continues. "And not just our current peers, but people who've been doing this for a while."

As for when the Horrors will try to impress their contemporaries with another album, Furse points to the coming year.

"Sometime next year we will definitely start to doing another album; it's just when the time actually presents itself."
