Yuck Refuse to Let Hype 'Get Ahead' of Them, Didn't Plan Throwback Sound

Before British quartet Yuck claimed their indie-darling title at SXSW this year, teenaged friends Max Bloom and Daniel Blumberg were in another band called Cajun Dance Party that only managed to release the 2008 album 'Colourful Life.'

"It happened very quickly and I was very young and it was just so weird because it wasn't a band that I wanted to be in and I wasn't particularly interested in being a part of it that much," Yuck guitarist and songwriter Bloom tells Spinner about his experience with CDP.

Luckily, Yuck have given him a chance to start anew and tour the world with their self-titled debut record, which some critics have deemed the second coming of '90s rock. "You can't describe your own music," says Bloom. "That's the thing I hate most doing in the world. If you could describe it well, it's kind of arrogant. 'We play fast, hard-hitting speed metal.'"

Despite their use of heavy reverb and catchy riffs, it was never the band's intent to sound like Dinosaur Jr. "Me and Daniel, when we first started, were really excited about working together and then we just wrote loads of songs in a very short space of time and recorded them," Bloom says. "We didn't really think about how it would sound. We did what felt like a natural thing to do. It was really a slow learning process how to record ourselves."

The group is surprised by the way the record has taken off, which has enabled them to get out of England and traverse the world. "It's always quite difficult to tell how well you're doing because you're in a certain place then you're in another place," explains Yuck's bushy-haired drummer Jonny Rogoff. "We went to Brazil and we just assumed no one knew our music or listened to our music much and then you get there, and then you have people who go, 'I love your album.' It's really tough to know how well you're doing until you go somewhere."

So far their tour has taken them on adventures all over the US. "I love driving around, especially in America," says Rogoff. "You can be on the highway for such a long time and then you're coming up to the city and you just see the skyline of the city coming up and entering the zone."

Things might be going well for Yuck, but they know they need to keep their wits about them. "You have to realize that your job is making music," says Bloom. "If you think that things cannot get any better, it depends what kind of person you are. I guess we're all quite down of earth. You can't let it get it ahead of you."

Yuck plan on releasing some B-sides and new material this year and then will hit the high seas in January on the Weezer Cruise. "I'm kind of worried, though," jokes Rogoff. "I feel the boat is going to sink. I think there's going to be too much rock for the boat to handle."
