No Joy Give Shout Out to New Buds Best Coast, Ponder 'Blogosphere' -- NXNE

No JoyMexican Summer

A band built on distance (original members Jasmine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd started out living in Los Angeles and Montreal, respectively), Montreal's No Joy continue to travel the globe, but this time together. Fresh off a European tour, the girls are back in their homeland for NXNE this week. White-Gluz took some time out of her busy schedule to fill Spinner in on her love of Blink 182, what she thinks of being considered a product of technology and the craziest compliment No Joy has received.

What do you think of being branded a product of technology?

To make a Napoleon Dynamite reference, "I love technology, always and forever." It's not too soon to start referencing that movie again, is it? If it will get us an Apple sponsorship or something, then yes, I love being a product of technology.

How have things changed since you've moved from being a strictly online collaboration to a band that can work face-to-face?

We weren't an "online" band very long; we've been a "face-to-face" band longer now since we have been touring nonstop.

Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast tweeted something along the lines that you were the best band ever, which started quite a buzz. How did she first hear about No Joy?

We played a show together in Montreal at the space Friendship Cove in April 2010, and we kept in touch. I don't think she knew about us before the show.

Did you know she was such a fan before the tweet?

Again, pretty sure she never heard of us until we were playing the same show. Since we played that show, though, all of Best Coast have been incredibly supportive and are also the raddest people ever.

How did things change for you after your band became such a hit in the blogosphere?

I actually don't read a lot of the music blogs so I wouldn't know. To me, a blogosphere hit is Grape Lady or that fat, redhead kid complaining about gingers.

A lot of music journalist and music fans put you in the category of shoegaze/dream pop. What do you think of that? Where would you put yourselves if you had to categorize your sound?

They could put us in the ska/rap category, frankly, and I would be fine with it, too. I have a hard time answering that question because if we planned how to categorize our sound that would be really contrived. We just do what we do -- you can call it whatever you want.

You've been described as Blink 182 crossed with Sunn 0))) and the Cocteau Twins. How do you feel about that comparison?

That is 100 percent perfect. We just jammed 'Dammit' backstage in Rome last night, actually, so I will say that is a totally accurate comparison.

What would be the ultimate compliment if someone were to make a similar comparison with different bands?

I can't actually think of a musical comparison that would be the ultimate compliment, but I appreciate it when people tell us that our band "makes them want to die" -- that's a pretty great compliment.

No Joy play the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern on Thursday, June 16 @ 1AM
