Lou Reed 'Red Shirley' Documentary Added to NXNE Film Festival Schedule

Lou Reed

As if deciding your concert schedules, bar-hopping excursions and ensuing hangover remedies wasn't enough for the musical portion of NXNE, here comes more news regarding the festival's Film Festival segment. Organizers today (May 30) announced the 10th anniversary will be celebrated with the inaugural Disposable Film Festival.

The Disposable Film Festival will show quirky and unique short works from directors the world over. The shorts will be created by using "new, inexpensive, accessible technologies." Organizers also confirmed additional local and international films to its schedule, including the Canadian Premiere of Lou Reed's documentary 'Red Shirley,' which features the iconic Velvet Underground frontman interviewing his cousin Shirley Novick on the eve of her 100th birthday.

Perhaps the oddest entry might be Chad Derrick's short documentary 'Shlemiel.' The film is apparently based on the band Men with Babies who auditioned for a slot on NXNE's 2007 music schedule but were turned down. Undeterred, the band kept their chin up and ended up playing the NXNE's Discovery Series.

Other entries include E.A. Moore's 'The Rise and Fall and Rise of Sensational,' which looks at the rapper's life story and 'Bloodied but Unbowed,' which concerns the "first wave of Vancouver's punk scene."

These films join previously announced screenings of The Replacements' fan documentary 'Color Me Obsessed' and the eagerly anticipated documentary 'Better Than Something: Jay Reatard.'

Some 40 films will be shown over two venues: Toronto's Underground Cinemas and the National Film Board's Toronto Mediatheque.

More information regarding schedules, films, wristbands and tickets is available at the festival site nxne.com.
