Silverchair Announce 'Indefinite Hibernation'

In what may come as a surprise to their fans or those who only remembered them from the '90s, Australian rockers Silverchair have announced they're going on an "indefinite hibernation."

"We formed Silverchair nearly 20 years ago when we were just 12 years old. Today we stand by the same rules now as we did back then ... if the band stops being fun and if it's no longer fulfilling creatively, then we need to stop," the members -- singer-guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies -- wrote in a joint letter on their website.

"Therefore after much soul searching we wanted to let you know that we're putting Silverchair into 'indefinite hibernation' and we've decided to each do our own thing for the foreseeable future."

The band skyrocketed to international fame on the strength of their 1995 double-platinum debut album, 'Frogstomp,' which was recorded when the members were only 15 years old and featured the single 'Tomorrow.' Silverchair's next four albums topped the charts in Australia but their international success declined. During their career, Johns battled anorexia and arthritis, and went through a publicized divorce with singer Natalie Imbruglia.

Silverchair had been working on a new album but called it quits when it became "increasingly clear that the spark simply isn't there between the three of us." The group revealed they were all working on separate projects at the moment, and ended the statement by writing, "With Sincere Thanks For Your Understanding. Sweet Dreams. Daniel, Ben and Chris."

Personally I thought they kicked the Chili Peppers butts when the opened for them in their first American tour. They were out same time as Bush.
This was DC area concert...not Calif.

I've never heard of this band either but I'd like to express that I can't stand it when you leave a page after listening to a snippet of the band's music and it keeps playing even after you leave the page. You leave a page because you've lost interest in what you were reading or listening to.

This band actually put out incredibly adventurous albums, but never got big in the states after Frogstomp. I'm amazed at the ignorance of most people on here. America isn't the only country on earth.

"Frogstomp" was an incredibly good recording from years gone past. It's amazing how many quality albums came out in the 90's, and how many of those artists only had one or two good albums in them (Beck and Alanis Morrisette would be prime examples). This "Straight Lines" video clearly shows why we haven't heard anything about Silver Chair in this country for years. Good luck boys, and thanks for the great product back in the 90's.

Never liked these guy from Austrialia(not the states..duh!!)..have always scene them as a nirvana/alice in chains rip off..but will say that at least they played real instruments. Im convinced that anything beyond the iron curtain of america music wise will always be better..america is too caught up in its own hype today like what you do matters..plp still bitch about "the birth certificate" and buy crappy lame weak music..it's own socialism in a way..

everyone who doesnt know who they are, are you teenagers? I don't particulary love the band, but I know who they are. My brother LOVES them. They were a 90s band for sure and were extremely popular. My guess if it was Taylor Swift or Justin Beiber you all would be having heart attacks. For those of us who like real, good music, though...are saddened by this RELEVANT news.
