Young Galaxy Ending 'Shapeshifting' Tour in April With Baby on the Way

Timing might not be Young Galaxy's strongest suit. This week, the Montreal-based indie rockers released their third album, 'Shapeshifting,' and are backing it with a winter tour through Canada and the US. However, with co-vocalist and keyboard player Catherine McCandless already six months pregnant, touring will halt at the beginning of April.

"I'll be very pregnant," McCandless tells Spinner with a giggle. "That's our last round of tour dates. We're due April 28," she says of her and husband, Young Galaxy's co-singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephen Ramsay, "so we'll have all of April to sit tight. I'll be gigantic onstage. I'm looking forward to that in a strange way. I think I'll move a little differently -- well, a lot less! I won't be shaking it onstage."

Young Galaxy gained huge momentum with their brilliant anthemic self-titled debut half a decade ago, only to falter and fall somewhat from view after their second album, 2009's 'Invisible Republic,' which saw a shift in sound from guitar-based songs to keys and electronics, failed to gain a simultaneous release outside Canada. Another case of bad timing? McCandless has no doubt about the cause: The recession.

"To be honest, it was a lot to do with the climate," she says. "We did have big interest from labels, but it didn't result in an offer. No one was ready to take on another project at the time. No one had wanted to invest in anything. We had invested up to our eyeballs at that point. We couldn't afford to do it ourselves in America, but we had no choice but to go forward. With 'Invisible Republic,' we thought it was important to us to put it out and make it available to people any way we could. It was a dark time for the band. We learned the ups and downs of the industry, quite significantly."
