Guided by Voices' Robert Pollard Won't 'Eliminate' Possibility of New Album

Along with Pavement and Blur, Guided by Voices made 2010 the year of unlikely reunions. Initially set as a headliner for Matador's 21st Birthday Bash, Robert Pollard and company spun it into a full-blown tour, playing large clubs that weren't really on the bill back when they disbanded in 2004. Now with a few final shows on the books, Pollard tells Spinner that a host of factors helped Guided by Voices during their time away to make this reunion something that was exciting for fans.

His reasons for the success? Simple: "The myth of obscurity. The brevity of our songs. Our ages and the hope that our ages gave to struggling bands. The perseverance and the quality of the songs over a long period of time."

The resurrection of Guides by Voices sent off a frenzy of ticket-buying across the country, leading to sell-out shows almost immediately. For Pollard, his own highlights weren't sales-driven but more about getting back into the relished in being able to smoke onstage at non-smoking venues, hanging with Eddie Vedder in Seattle and actress Chloe Sevigny in Los Angeles, as well as his son and grandson in Portland, Ore.

"The entire tour was a blast," he says. "Rehearsals were a little slow and rough but we managed to knock 'em out. It's just been a while and it took a little longer than I expected to regain the touch. I was actually very excited about contacting the band. Finding [drummer] Kevin Fennell wasn't so easy."

Guided by Voices' last album was 2004's 'Half Smiles of the Decomposed' and although Pollard's typically releasing albums at a fevered pace with his Boston Spaceships band and a few other upcoming projects, there's nothing more exciting to think about than another proper GBV record. So, will it happen?

"I've thought about it sometimes but it's a very long shot," he says. "We all kind of do our own thing. I'm not completely eliminating the possibility, but I have a band called Boston Spaceships and we make a lot of records."

The last four confirmed GBV dates start with a small club show on Dec. 30 at Maxwell's in Hoboken, N.J. and end in Louisville on Jan. 15.

After that, only time will dictate Guided By Voices' fate.
