Kevin Drew Reveals the 'Drama' Behind K.C. Accidental and Broken Social Scene

Daniel Boczarski, Redferns

In listening to the recently reissued K.C. Accidental albums -- the precursor to Canadian musical collective Broken Social Scene -- one might have trouble connecting the dots. Vocals are scarce and the songs have a more post-rock-meets-electronic slant at times, but as mastermind Kevin Drew explains it, the foundations for this year's 'Forgiveness Rock Record' were set with his first project

"Our melodies have remained the same since we started," Drew tells Spinner of his collaboration with Spearin. "I can see how I chose the chords that were going to guide me through my life. Whether it was an F, a G or a C, I could see that's where I was going to spend a lot of my time."

When they met, Drew was a budding music producer and Spearin was finding moderate success with his own act, Do Make Say Think. The pair hunkered down and essentially explored songwriting in a rather primal state, where structure was more or less put on the back burner.

"If you listen to the Do Make Say Think records or the Broken Social Scene, you can see that it's two guys that heavily rely on melody, repetition and percussion and, basically, anthems," Drew says. "We were very much into anthemic music. These recordings, I really think they represent where we were both headed in terms of our musical paths."

With the passage of time and plenty of success, Drew naturally says that meeting Spearin was one of the greatest moments in his life.

"Every record I've made, Charlie's been there. Every single one," he says. "Some people will tell you that I'm a very dramatic person, but I was a pretty dramatic kid. I really loved the way that I figured out with Charles, how to take that drama and make it into music. All you had was ideas back then, especially if you weren't writing songs, which we weren't. We were writing melodic ideas. For me, now at 34, I realize the power's in the song."
