It's college rankings time, so we at Spinner evaluated universities near and far, ordering them according to their matriculation of musicians. Bands like the Commodores (Tuskegee University), Talking Heads (Rhode Island School of Design), Pink Floyd (University of Westminster) and Hall and Oates (Temple University) met while pursuing higher education. So even if you're not into that whole cracking the books thing, college can at least be a good place to find a drummer who keeps time.
20
Cornell University
Ithaca, N.Y.
Alumni: Peter, Paul and Mary's Peter Yarrow, Huey Lewis, Harry Chapin, Greg Graffin of Bad Religion.

According to Merriam-Webster, an alumnus is "a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university." So you don't have to graduate. What would really be interesting is a list of many schools with their pro musician alumni and which ones graduated and with what degree.

Good to see TVU at the top! In recent years staff too have included Quo producer Pip Williams, electro pioneer John Foxx, and producer Mike Howlett.

To produce a 'top 20' like this means absolutely nothing, there are no numbers involved here anyway. It's totally pointless, other than to say that some musicians, the ones that you have chosen, went to some universities. Many others are not shown, others did not go to university at all. Also their musical ability may have had nothing whatsoever to do with their university, college or school.

For NYU, you should add Alan Menken, write of all those Disney movies (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, etc.) and Little Shop of Horrors, and many more.

This list is very misleading. "Alumni" have to GRADUATE! Hardly any of these people actually graduated, they merely attended some college or university for a while. An accurate list of true alumni would be interesting- e.g., does not Queen's Brian May actually have a PhD in astrophysics (!) from a university in the UK?
