Broken Social Scene Release Fan-Made Video in Response to G20 Summit

Broken Social SceneDuring their set at the Toronto Island concert last month, Broken Social Scene lead singer Kevin Drew was vocal about his disdain for the G20 Summit. At the time, no one could have understood the scope of destruction this gathering of the top nations' leaders would bring upon the band's hometown the following weekend -- but now, in the aftermath of the summit, Drew's contempt was justified on many fronts.

It's been weeks since violent protests and alleged police brutality rocked Toronto, yet the event is far from over. Conversations persist in the media and around the nation's dinner table about what went down and what's next. And of course, Broken Social Scene are never ones to shy away from controversy.

On Friday morning, as the band was en route to Chicago as part of their summer festival tour de force, they released a fan video created as a response to the summit.

"It was sent to us by a lover of our music who wants to remain anonymous," Drew wrote, adding simply, "the rest speaks for itself."

The video is a mash-up montage of images set to BSS' epic instrumental, 'Meet Me in the Basement.' The track, from the band's Polaris Prize-nominated 'Forgiveness Rock Record,' serves as a swelling backdrop while clips of everything from cop cars burning on Toronto's streets and guarded police lines to kids' TV shows, Nike ads, and The Tyra Show make flashing appearances.

The artistic piece makes a strong statement about government and society, and doesn't shy away from showcasing all the ways we've gone wrong -- the recent BP oil spill is among the disasters that get air time in the video.

Drew says the band was proud to share the mash-up and, as succinct as his statement was, we likely haven't heard his final word on the subject.

If this is the modern idea of an "epic instrumental", we are in a worse state of affairs than anything depicted in the video. Or maybe it's only appropriate to show these disturbing images accompanied by the equally horrendous sounds of our plummeting "music" scene.
