Since coming on the scene in 2007, Ebony Bones has jammed with punk icon Rat Scabies, shared stages with Basement Jaxx and the Slits and generally caused a stir wherever she's gone. The only thing she hasn't done, at least in the United States, is release an album."It's just so phenomenal," Bones tells Spinner. "The power of the Internet now has really displayed itself. We played Lisbon and it was to 2,000 people. It was sold out and they haven't even got the record yet. It's very exciting that this is galvanizing and people are really gravitating to it. I don't take any of it for granted. I feel really blessed."
Fans eager to hear Bones' debut won't have to wait much longer, as 'Bone of My Bones,' a collection of songs the London native and former child actress wrote and produced herself, is coming soon to the States.
When asked to explain the delayed release -- for some reason, the record is only available in Japan, where it's been out since last summer -- Bones glosses over the question, hinting at record-label drama she's determined to put behind her.
"It's worked out really well," she says. "The touring has been manic. We spent most of last year on the road. I don't think I saw London five times last summer, which was quite interesting, because that's my home."
An early MySpace adopter and fan of digital promotion, Bones makes music well-suited for the digital era. Like M.I.A., an artist to whom she's often compared, the self-taught multi-instrumentalist takes a global approach to pop, drawing from electronic, hip-hop, African, punk, soul and glam-rock influences.
"We're in a real technology age, where accessibility to music is at its forefront, and kids are finding out what they want, when they want," Bones says. "And that's pretty much how my music has been able to grow from being able to come to the US and sell out shows in Miami, or whatever, without a release, which is random."
