Dead Weather Get 'Personal' at Jack White's Nashville Studio

The Dead Weather's new album, 'Sea of Cowards,' is out today. The band -- Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Jack White (White Stripes/Raconteurs), Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs) and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) -- recorded the second record at White's Third Man Records studio in Nashville, Tenn., which is also where the Gothy garage band played their very first show in March 2009.

"It's such a personal studio, he's in every tiny part of it," Mosshart tells Spinner, referring to White. "Every little detail. It's great because it's small and you are all in the room together playing, and you don't leave that room. It's definitely one of my favorites to work in." One of the benefits of recording in Nashville as opposed to Los Angeles, New York or London, where Mosshart and the Kills are based, is less people dropping by to hang out. "The one problem with working in L.A. or London is the traffic. When you're somewhere like Nashville or recording like Jamie [Hince, of the Kills] and I do in the middle of Michigan somewhere, people don't typically show up."

Like the band's debut, 'Horehound,' which was only released in July 2009, the record came together surprisingly quick with the songs mostly conceived while the quartet toured last year. "We started writing it at sound checks. It just started happening by itself again," Mosshart says matter-of-factly. "We never talk about these things; they just seem to happen. Then we'd have a couple of days off here and there in Nashville and just go into the studio because it's the most exciting thing to do [there]. We'd record and suddenly we had another record again."
