Doves Set for Two-Year Break

Doves are planning to take a two year break from recording together, band member Jimi Goodwin has revealed.

As previously reported in Spinner, the band denied rumours of a permanent split. However, Goodwin has now told the Daily Record that it was time for the band to get off the "album-tour-album-tour treadmill."

He explained, "None of us are ready to face going into the studio for another two years. This is wiping the slate clean -- we have nothing else in the vaults now. That is it. Whatever we do from now on will be a new start."

Having taken four years to record 2009 album 'Kingdom of Rust,' the Mancunian outfit swiftly followed up with a best of compilation, 'The Places Between,' released on April 5 this year. Now the band have embarked on a UK tour that began last night (April 28) in Hull.

Although his main band may wind down after festival appearances this summer, Goodwin aims to keep busy and is hoping to finally work with Elbow's Guy Garvey. It is a project they have discussed for a while, he explained.

"Me and Guy have been talking about it endlessly for years," he said. "There are a couple of tracks that we have passed back and forwards to each other but it's having the time. We keep trying to get our diaries together. Who knows if it will ever get released? I'm just waiting to see what might happen."

No disrespect to the Doves-just because I have never heard of you does not mean that your music is no good- but because most of us have not heard of you AOL should not have made this look like a front page news story- AOL, you are becoming like the tabloids, but with worse editing

Yeah but they are only the original drummer (Roger Earl) now. Tony Stevens left a long time ago and Rod Price and Lonesome Dave passed away along time ago.

O.k. Jeffrey obviously woke up on the wrong side of the pond today. Now whenever aol/spinner post these break ups or whatever, they usually act like it is some major group that everyone knows i.e. Rolling Stones, U2 etc. When alot of us realze that the band is some obscure group that isn't like the affore mentioned groups, it usually becomes open season from smart asses like me. Smart asses like the affore mentioned me love reading the snide/sarcastic/funny remarks then left behind.

Jeffy, you needn't take them so personal. If you find them so annoying/offensive then click on that x you were talking about. If not then, go ahead and sob when we make fun of whatever group. We're just having a little fun and the more you rant and bitch about us, the funnier it is to everyone.

P.S Jimi Goodwin is talking about working with Ronnie Rolodex formerly of Stinky and the Fist Puppets as he just found out that no one has ever heard of Guy Garvey or Elbow including himself.

The comment about reusing was sarcasm, relax. I never called bands like The Beatles garbage, I didn't even call this band garbage :P

And I didn't make any negative comments about this band. You sure are hypocritical, you know? You can close the window and move on if you haven't heard of the band, yet you accuse those who ask who they are of trolling comments. You don't seem to understand that just because YOU are interested in this band, doesn't mean there aren't plenty of people who HAVEN'T heard of them

You're generalizing people who don't know who this band is. That's pretty lame. So quite a few people made negative comments or asked 'Who is this?', you may be offended because you may like this band. But, you're just as bad as those making negative comments.

I sort of had to make generalizations since my original comment was directed at multiple commenters. I'm WELL AWARE that not many people have heard (or heard of) Doves. If there were any commenters out there that were sincere in really wanting to know who the band is, you and I both know they could have typed it into Wikipedia and read the whole bio or gone to any number of websites to hear some snippets of music. I even gave a little one sentence synopsis of who they are in my original comment, "Doves have been around for well over a decade and are one of the more popular rock acts across the pond."

Most of the "Who are they?" comments were pretty clearly snide and sarcastic though and meant as an insult. However most people didn't simply type "Who are these guys?". Here are the comments I was really focusing on:

"No, not the Doves....say it isn't so.....How will I be able to go on with living..........."


"They can take a long break because I've never heard of them. Anything after 1990 is shit anyway."

"This just in - The members of the band "No Talent Unknowns" have decided not to form the band "No Talent Unknowns" and have therefore cancelled their upcoming farewell and reunion tours."

"WHO ? ? ? How does AOL keep coming up with news on bands that absolutely nobody has ever heard of. Sorry, if they will not be missed by ANYONE...Maybe they will come back and have at least one song that anybody ever heard or will hear. Look like a bunch of losers to me."

"Dear Aol music person, Stop writing about bands who only perform in your friends basement. Thank you"

These are clearly negative comments from people who are passing judgement on a band they've never even heard, simply because of the fact that they haven't heard of them! If they'd heard the band and commented something like, "I bought their first CD and hated it, this band sucks", I could at least respect their credibility and opinion since they've actually heard the music. If music publications only wrote about bands that everyone has heard of, how boring would that be? Wouldn't that make it a bit harder to discover new music? If Rolling Stone only reviewed albums by bands like U2, Pearl Jam, & Radiohead wouldn't that be pretty lame?

Also, I never intended to imply that you (specifically) made negative comments about this band. The line, "Just because you aren't interested..." was meant to be a more general usage as in "you guys".
