It's no secret that 30 Seconds to Mars have an extremely loyal fan base, and the band's show at New York City's Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday night showed just how devoted they were. With the audience jumping and crowd surfing on command and singing every lyric as loud as they possibly can, it felt like 30 Seconds to Mars were rallying up an army. "You people are just like me," 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto, who sported a bright red mohawk, yelled to the crowd. "You're out of your f---ing minds. Thanks to you, now I look like one of the village people. But it's New York City. You party with your tits out."
30 Seconds to Mars filled their set with a mix of old and new tracks, and Leto made sure to keep everyone entertained, talking to the crowd as if he were addressing his close friends. To Leto, everyone in the room was more than just a fan. "Welcome to the family," he said. "We f---ing love you more than life itself."
Complete with an intense laser light show and a backup rhythm section care of masked punk drummers Street Drum Corp, 30 Seconds to Mars were ready to give their fans a show they wouldn't forget. Radio host Matt Pinfield, who introduced the band's set, announced that the band had surprises that would only happen during this New York show, and he was right. When Shannon Leto traded his drum sticks for an acoustic guitar to play 'L490,' the other Leto caused a stir in the back as he quickly made his way to the soundbooth where the band's first special feature would take place.
After Shannon's solo, attention zeroed in on Jared in the back of the venue where he jumped onto a small platform with his guitar. Surrounded by a sea of people, Leto performed an acoustic medley of tunes including 'Hurricane,' 'Capricorn' and 'Revenge' -- a song he said "his grandpappy taught him" -- as well as a cover of Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance.' Leto then started off 'The Kill' by himself only to be joined by his bandmates on the main stage, who continued playing as the lead singer jumped into the crowd and ran as quickly as he could back to the front of the venue.
Although the night seemed to go fairly smoothly, Leto did almost stumble during 'The Fantasy' and the set also experienced tiny feedback issues, which he reassured everyone by saying, "That's just the subway passing through."
Despite the issues, the band kept the energy high and going up until the encore. Before going into their last song for the night, Leto made sure to keep his Twitter followers happy, posting photos from the show. Excitement erupted when Leto started inviting people onstage for 'Kings and Queens' as people scrambled and even crowd-surfed their way to the already packed stage.
If the 30 Seconds to Mars army didn't get enough of their favorite rockers, the band promised everyone they weren't going to party that night and instead stay after the show to meet and sign autographs for anyone who wanted one. If you weren't lucky enough to get tickets, check out a video of Leto performing from the crowd below.
