Canadian folk singer Kate McGarrigle, best known as the matriarch of the Montreal musical clan that includes sister Anna and children Rufus and Martha Wainwright, has died of cancer at age 63.
Kate and Anna recorded ten albums together as the McGarrigle Sisters, first establishing themselves on the burgeoning Canadian folk music scene in the 1970s and going on to win two Juno Awards well into the 1990s.
By that point, McGarrigle was recognized by a whole new generation as the mother of two rising talents: baroque pop singer Rufus Wainwright and his torch-folkie sister, Martha. (Their father is McGarrigle's former husband, acerbic singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III).
But long before her kids took center-stage, Kate was known for her rootsy melodies and indelible harmonies on characteristically Canadian songs such as the McGarrigle Sisters' version of 'The Log Driver's Waltz,' which was the soundtrack to a popular 1979 short animated film by Canada's National Film Board.
In recent years, McGarrigle continued to be as musically relevant as ever, inspiring many artists of the current era, collaborating not only with Rufus and Martha -- who credited their mother with encouraging and supporting their own music -- but also edgier acts such as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (singing backing vocals on his 2001 album 'No More Shall We Part').
Beloved in Quebec and internationally for singing in both French and English, McGarrigle managed to cross over in both languages long before many other Canadian artists did the same. Over their 35-year career, the McGarrigle Sisters' songs were covered by a plethora of artists in all genres, including Billy Bragg, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and many others.
McGarrigle reportedly passed away Monday night in Montreal after a battle with clear-cell carcinoma. Rufus Wainwright had cancelled his Australian tour, scheduled for next month, to be by her side.

So sad! I was hoping to see and hear them perform again in Montreal...
I am also from the lower Laurentians, bilingual and about the same age, also a bit marginal like the sisters so I have always felt close to them and their songs.
I am so glad to have most of their c.d's

I am so sad. I did not know she was ill either. A great talent. Anna and the whole family will be lost without her.

I agree with you 1000%, I heard her tunes in my younger days, and was just searching YouTube today for the songs of my youth. So many people, who have touched our lives, and suddenly, they aren't there anymore. RIP

The death of Kate is sad news. A real talent has been silenced. My sympathy goes out to her family and close friends.

I always tried not to miss any opportunity to see Kate and Anna when they played in my area. With warmth, grace and beauty, those concerts (often feeling more like gatherings of friends) never failed to provide moving and uplifting experiences that I have continued to treasure throughout my life. A great sadness today, but also a great joy to listen to the music and watch the videos and remember. With much love and heartfelt condolences to Rufus, Martha, Anna, Janie and the whole family/community. Thank you, Kate.

The death of kate is a great lose. Her inspiration to other musicians and singers was enormous. I will certainly miss Kate and Anna McGarrigle singing together, espcially when they sang Complainte pour Sainte Catherine in their wonderful Quebequois French.
God bless you Kate

I hadn't heard of her before but after reading the posts by Canadians, she made enormous contributions and I look forward to hearing more of her music. Just think of all the great must and artistry that has come from of neighbors to the north.

I met Kate in Jan of '73 with a very, very young Rufus on her lap as she was accompanying her then husband Loudon Wainwright on his first hi-profile tour to back up his then recent CBS release Album III...and I;ver remained a fan ever since. Had no idea she'd been ill...my condolences to the McGarrigle, Wainwright and Roche families and all who knew her grace and beauty.

so sad to see this beautiful voice had to go. First I heard her was actually the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album but since had heard her other work and she was truly talented.

Right on, Gary.

Too much of today's music is a computer-generated soundtrack for a pretty face dressed like a stripper to lip-synch to. Kate was a true artist. Her singing was never self-conscious or ostentatious and was always right on target. I will miss her.

I guess God needed a beautiful, moving voice to welcome dead Haitian earthquake victims into Heaven with a song ;>)

ALL DEATH IS TRAGIC. I WONDER WHY GOD CREATED US ANYWAY? WE'RE NOT ON EARTH FOR A LONG TIME AND HE CAN TAKE US ANY TIME AFTER WE'RE BORN.
What's the point?
RIP
