Director Robert Zemeckis is in negotiation with four British actors to play the Beatles in his forthcoming 3D remake of the 1968 cartoon 'Yellow Submarine,' the Hollywood Reporter has said. The performance-capture remake will see John Lennon played by Dean Lennox Kelly, currently starring in BBC drama 'Robin Hood,' Paul McCartney played by 'Shaun of the Dead' actor Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell as Ringo Starr.
Cary Elwes, who has previously worked with Zemeckis on recent 3D movie 'A Christmas Carol,' will play George Harrison.
As Spinner reported in November, Zemeckis had hoped to get surviving Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to appear in the Disney-affliated movie, but would go ahead regardless of their involvement. He explained: "The Beatles have always been a great source of inspiration for me. I think it's a perfect example of a movie that can be re-envisioned in the digital cinema and be absolutely beyond spectacular. I call it, 'Yellow Submarine: The Digital Trip!'"
The original '68 animation was based on the Beatles music, but the band didn't participate and were voiced by actors. The Disney remake has licensed 16 Beatles tracks for use from Sony/ATV and EMI-Capitol Records and tribute band Fab 4 will be motion-captured for the special effects.
