Editors Add Bonus Tracks to US Release of 'In This Light'

EditorsEnglish indie rockers Editors are set to release their third album, 'In This Light and on This Evening,' in the US on Jan. 19 with an additional five bonus tracks. Basically, that's a free EP's worth of songs, all of which were recorded during the same sessions as the album. Editors' singer Tom Smith tells Spinner that these outtakes may not have made it onto the album, but they were too good to leave in the vaults.

"They were pretty close to going on the record," Smith says. "We recorded nearly 20 songs during what was a pretty prolific time. When it came time to picking the ones for the album, it took a little while but those nine songs we chose felt to us like the best album as a whole."

Editors will head to the US in February to continue a world tour that's already taken them through Europe and Australia since the album's fall release overseas. Did the post-punk revivalists consider making a double album? "No," Smith scoffs. "Has there ever been a good double album? It's hard to pick a double album that's great. These days people can't even sit through one album, let alone a double album. People can't communicate in more than 15 characters on Twitter anymore, so a double album would be a terrible idea."

"Didn't the Chili Peppers do a double album? I don't know," Smith continues. "We made the album with Flood and the conversation of a double album did come up. We were like, 'No, they're all shit.' Flood politely reminded us that he did do Smashing Pumpkins' 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,' the biggest selling double album of all time. We were like, 'Oh, alright then.'"
