In the trippy and colorful Islands video 'No You Don't,' you might recognize actor Michael Cera as the star having a bit of an odd experience."I like the finished product a lot," Cera told Spinner at Wednesday's premiere of his new comedy, 'Youth in Revolt,' in Hollywood. "It was just a fun three days of hanging out with friends. I'm friends with [Islands frontman] Nick [Thorburn] and Derrick [Beckles], who directed the video. We just went to upstate New York and hung out at a friend's house and filmed for two days. It was fun."
In the video, Cera takes some pills and enters a zonked-out, psychedelic universe where his hair is messed up and he is seeing stars. Atop Islands' jagged electro-rock pop, Cera sees angels, has his hands turn blue and appears to start crying at one point.
Cera is also a fan of Beckles' work outside of the Islands video. "'TV Carnage' is some of the most brilliant stuff out there right now," he said of Beckles' series that pieces together old TV clips into one product. "They have five DVD's out, you should see it. It's really awesome."
On his blog, Beckles wrote of the video, "Quite recently I was asked by a one Nick Diamonds [Thorburn] to do a video for his band Islands. Apparently he had seen my feature releases under the 'TV Carnage' moniker and regaled me with stories of how the collection had 'saved his life' and how the DVDs had become a beckon of hope for his creative endeavors."
