Chris Feinstein, Bassist for Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Dies at 42

Ryan Adams' former band the Cardinals has lost its bassist, Chris Feinstein. The 42-year-old reportedly died at his home in Manhattan. The cause of death is still unknown.

Feinstein joined the Cardinals in 2006 as a touring member and played bass on their 2007 releases 'Easy Tiger' and the 'Follow the Lights' EP, as well as 2008's 'Cardinology.' He was also a major contributor to the 2002 'I Am Sam' soundtrack, serving as a producer and playing bass, guitar and percussion. Feinstein played bass with a variety of different musicians, including Fat Joe on his 2002 album 'Loyalty,' Albert Hammond Jr.'s 2006 album 'Yours to Keep' and on Minnie Driver's 2008 album 'Seastories.'

Clearly, he was versatile but also didn't limit his interests to just the pop and rock worlds. As a mixer, he worked in more electronica settings with Moby and on a variety of different trance and techno compilations.

On the Lost Highway Records website, Cardinals drummer Brad Pemberton said, "This is the saddest day of my life. I lost my best friend today ... things will never be quite the same."

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced. For a look at Feinstein playing with the Cardinals, check out this extended version of 'Easy Plateau.'

I'm quite shocked by the news of Chris' death. When we were practically kids, I was lucky enough to get to see him a few times a year when he came to town with his band Iodine(with Brad Pemberton and Jay Joyce). We were all proud of his success post Iodine, no matter how anonymous it may seem to some of you. Forty-two years old seems so much younger than it used to. Everyone in Dayton will miss you. It's a crying shame.

I am so surprised at this tragic death. The holidays are such a gruesome time and compounded by the loss of one of my favourite musicians - a loss to all the Cardinals fans out there. My thoughts are with the Cards & all their families.

How can anyone say this is not saddest news just because they dont know who this musician is? Well other people know and its their oppinion. Then i read well there was more sadder deaths when it came to other people? Its human life... no one star is better than the next... its all a great loss. May everyone have a Healthy and Happier Chanukah, Christmas and New Years. Time are tough all over baby. Lets stick togther.

Saddest news of the year, an extremely talented man and a real good guy. This is a sad day not only for music but for everything. My thoughts go out to the family and the Cardinal family who have lost a great great person.

Just because Chris Feinstein isn't necessarily as well known as the people you listed, doesn't mean he wasn't great. Quite the opposite, actually, and in my opinion, more talented and amazing than all the people you said combined.
