Band of Horses Adopt Atlanta as a Hometown

For the third year running, Band of Horses will ring in the New Year with two shows in Atlanta, Ga. "My family is from Atlanta. I grew up there and went to high school there," vocalist/guitarist Ben Bridwell tells Spinner. "I consider Atlanta a bit of a home town. It seems that every Christmas and Thanksgiving we are there. I have a lot of cousins in the Athens area, too. My brother lives there. We have a few hometowns and that's one of them." The band, which had its genesis in South Carolina before hitting the big-time after moving to Seattle, seems to be collecting hometowns. "Yeah, we are. We've got Seattle, Charleston, Atlanta, Tucson," Bridwell says. "Every time we go to one of those towns, the guest list gets way full."
"I tell you what, I'm not missing Seattle right now," Bridwell continues, chatting from Los Angeles, where the band is recording its third album. "It's nice and sunny right here. I don't exactly miss those days when it rains -- seven months of darkness." So, could L.A. become his next hometown? "For the first time, I like the city. For the greater part of the past decade, we've been on van tours coming to L.A. After the nightmare drive, we'd get into town and, I don't know, sometimes the stress of playing such a major market gets the best of me. But, now, we just kind of settled in. We enjoy being here. It ends up being like another hometown in a way."
Bridwell agrees that L.A. has its own groove and there's no point in fighting it. "If you surrender yourself to it, you might actually enjoy yourself," he says.
Band of Horses plays the Tabernacle in Atlanta on Dec. 30 and 31.
