Dev Hynes isn't called Lightspeed Champion for nothing. Following in Bob Dylan's prolific self-bootlegging mode, the indie pop singer-songwriter, released 'House-Sitting Songs' via his website this week. Hynes tells Spinner that the record is one of around 50 albums he plans to put online. Wait -- 50? "At the very least," he says. "Some, I would say, are awful. If I really don't like it, I delete it. But, mostly I find it all interesting. It's an experiment. Even some that I don't like particularly, I like the idea behind it." At first, he says he wasn't impressed with 'House-Sitting Songs.' "At the time that I did it in May, I put it online and then took it off within the hour. I put it on this morning after listening and thought, 'Wow, this is pretty cool,'" he says.
The album is offered as an online-only free download -- "Some things are worth paying for and some aren't," says Hynes -- and should tide fans over until the next Lightspeed Champion label release, ' Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You,' which is due Feb. 16 on Domino Records.
'House-Sitting Songs' isn't Hynes' first online issue. "Over the last few years, I put out a few but I just decided this morning to do it properly," he says. "What triggered it off was I was looking to see if it had been snuck online. Then I saw that someone had made a Wikipedia page for it and I thought that was interesting, someone really does want to hear it. So, I thought of really doing it and chronicling it. Every now and then, if I find an album that I think is kind of okay, I'll put one up. Maybe once a week."
