The first thing most people notice about Deadmau5 is the helmet -- performing DJ sets with a helmet shaped like a giant mouse head makes it pretty hard for an audience to forget him. At the same time, people seem to care just as much about the music as the man, as the artist born Joel Zimmerman has been absolutely dominating the charts of one-stop dance music shop Beatport, a run that seemingly has been going strong since 2007. "I think my sound was -- at that time -- unique and new, so everybody seemed to jump on it and then try and copy it," he tells Spinner. Since that initial ascension he says "I'm trying to change my sound all the time."While Deadmau5 appears to have conquered the electro world swiftly, there's still one important piece of the puzzle left before the takeover is complete: a full-length album. Though he now has two official albums under his belt, 'Random Album Title' and 'For Lack of a Better Name,' those slices of electronic and progressive house bliss are mixes of mostly pre-released work. "The artist album will be a very different way of making music for me," Deadmau5 says of his next project, "and I'll be working with a lot of different collaborators." For those salivating at something different from the esteemed producer, there's a chance you might see it "by the start of next summer."
Until then, though, we've got a special treat for Deadmau5 fans -- an exclusive mix for Spinner. It captures the mouse's signature sound in that it spans an impressive amount of genres, moods and tastes within a single hour, whether it's thumping house, breakneck techno or laid-back ambiance. To get a taste of it yourself, hear the new Deadmau5 mix below.
