The Kills Working on New Album

Alison MosshartThis past June, the Kills made headlines after the UK press claimed frontman Jamie Hince's girlfriend, supermodel Kate Moss, chucked a laptop containing six brand new band tracks into a pool.

"It's not true. People make it up," Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart tells Spinner. The story seemed believable enough -- after all, this was the same band that had their tour bus stolen from right under their nose during a tour with the Raconteurs a couple years ago. Luckily, the band ended up getting their stuff back and the bus driver wound up in jail, albeit for selling illegal parking spaces in Miami.

"England is really different than here. I would never believe anything you read coming from that country if it's s--- talking. It's just an onslaught, every single day, of bulls--- stories," says Mosshart, a Florida-native who has called London home for 10 years now. While she did squander any rumors of a lovers' quarrel, Mosshart says the Kills hope to have their fourth studio effort out "the middle of the year if everyone gets their s--- together really quickly."

The Kills spent the whole of September in London working on the follow-up to 2008's 'Midnight Boom. "We've got two more months working coming up at the beginning in the year ... around December," she says of her plans between now and heading back on tour with the Dead Weather in March.

For phase one of creating their next album, Mosshart and Hince sat on opposite sides of their usual London music headquarters, what they often refer to as Red Meat Heart HQ, hashing out ideas. "We wrote about six to seven songs each and they're all quite different from another," Mosshart says. "There's really no way to describe them as they are now to where they are going to be. We tend to write all our songs on acoustic guitar first, wherever we are, and then they change like 500 percent by the time they are on the record." Even Mosshart notes the process can be long. "We're always messing around with drum machines and samplers," she says, "but I'm sure Jamie is going to take it to a whole new dimension as he always does."
