Less than two months after reviving his Pax-Am Records imprint to "fill your fall with vinyl, digital singles and T-shirts you don't need," Ryan Adams has lived up to that promise, releasing new sides to fans nearly every two weeks. Even if critics have accused Adams of being prolific to a fault, his fans have gladly snatched up the collectible pink marble vinyl single, 'Oblivion/People Need Sunlight,' which is already sold out.Until a digital version of those tracks hits the market, which we expect any day now, Adams has made his sadly beautiful new ballad 'Jimmy Whistlenut' available for download via Stereogum. Ryan's in rare form on this ode to a Robitussin and crack-addled character with an affinity for break dancing, not to mention a sax-blowing wife and a trouser-licking pooch.
Getting back to the single, Ryan says, via his official site, that the A-side was recorded "right before 'Easy Tiger' came out right before I quit getting wasted. Those were wild and crazy times indeed and I have always loved this track. You can almost taste the pollution in my mouth." The flip was recorded was recorded on Adams' computer at home and fleshed out at Sunset Sound. Both tracks were overseen by Adams' bandmate and producer of choice, Jamie Candiloro.
As for the time spent at the famed Sunset Sound facility, where classic albums like the Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds' and the Doors' self-titled debut were recorded, Adams says, "Sunset is an amazing place where many a musician has passed out AND played a solo at the same time while hurling. All in a day's not work."
