The Hundreds and Thousands may sound pretty upbeat for the most part, but the latest single from the band formerly known as Starling gets away from their trademark power-pop exuberance to delve into some darker sonic territory.
"This song is a moody atmospheric rant," lead singer Ian LeFeuvre tells Spinner. "It's about my observation that often the people who seem to complain the most are the ones who already seem to have the most in life, be it money, friends, family, whatever. They have all these things to be grateful for yet their sense of entitlement and bottomless dissatisfaction still get the better of them. So, they just keep complaining. This song is pointed at people I know and sometimes it's pointed at myself."
To "give people the sense of being flies on the wall," the veteran musicians set up cameras and an analogue recording console in their small studio to capture the audio and video simultaneously. "We are not fans of the lip-synced video," LeFeuvre says. "We realize that musicians need to sell and promote their work but we just can't bring ourselves to pretend to perform along with a recording of us playing. People don't seem to question the medium a whole lot but it has always struck me as dubious. Maybe a lot of other people who make music are just better actors than we are?"
