Lady GaGa Covers Kate Bush/Peter Gabriel With Canadian Rockers

Lady Gaga will do as Lady GaGa pleases, thank you very much. That includes shooting fire from her breasts, and, though a little less dangerous, covering the Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush duet 'Don't Give Up' with Canadian rockers the Midway State.

"It was really exciting doing that collaboration with Nathan," Lady GaGa tells Spinner of Midway State frontman Nathan Ferraro. "I love that song so much. I really let Midway State take the lead. I wanted it to be more pop -- something that young people would hear and learn something about Kate Bush."

Midway State recorded the song in their native Toronto with co-producer Gavin Brown (Metric), and Lady GaGa cut her part satellite style in Los Angeles.

"We were kind of scared in the beginning to try to live up to something like that, but it's modern and different," Ferraro says of the cover. "We added synths. We made it something you could slow dance to in the club."

The idea for the collaboration came from Martin Kierszenbaum, the A&R person for both artists at Interscope. "He introduced the two of us," Ferraro says. "We met [Lady GaGa] in New York and we talked about it. When we finished [recording], we were both super into it so shortly thereafter we recorded a video for the song."

Gabriel and Bush originally made two videos for the song, about a man in despair being comforted by the words of a woman. The Midway State/Lady GaGa version is "a re-do of the original in a modern way," Ferraro says, though a release date has yet to be set. "We're in discussions," he says. "Obviously, the leak [of the song] puts a little damper on things."

'Don't Give Up' has been covered many times, including takes by Willie Nelson and Sinead O'Connor, and Bono and Alicia Keys, who cut 'Don't Give Up (Africa)' in 2005, for World AIDS Day.
