Explosions in the Sky Still Haven't Seen 'Friday Night Lights'

It's been more than two years since we've last heard from Austin, Texas' Explosions in the Sky in the form of new material. While the band is gearing up for a short 10th anniversary tour this summer, they're slowly getting some new songs to take shape.

"We were having some trouble the last few months finding a direction. We just kept hitting walls," drummer Christopher Hrasky tells Spinner. "But things have picked up in the last few weeks. We're just feeling really enthusiastic about the new stuff we're working on. It's impossible to say when we will have a new record. It will probably be a while as we've never been particularly fast workers."

That said, the band is using this upcoming tour to pull out some old songs and possibly retire some, as well. But nothing new just yet. "We do have a lot of new parts of songs and almost songs but nothing is ready to play," Hrasky says. "I do think we're going to being playing a couple songs from our first record, which isn't something we normally do. We're also looking at this tour as a way to say goodbye to some of these songs. Not that we're never going to play them again but after this summer, we really just want to focus on what we're playing and thinking about now as opposed to stuff we were thinking about several years ago."

Still, over the years, those older Explosions in the Sky tunes have been featured prominently in the NBC dramedy 'Friday Night Lights.' "I am sort of embarrassed to admit that I've never actually seen the show," Hrasky says. "I have many friends who love it, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet."

That's a good thing. Getting sucked into the world of Dillon, Texas could set a new album back years.
